"Raw Food Living"

Raw food diets have been around for a long time. Most likely, the very first humans ate only raw food. It is only natural that our body responds best to those foods it was designed to eat.

There is a whole industry that has sprouted up to support the raw food movement. This movement started to become more public in the late 1960s and early 1970s. However, at that time it was associated with the counterculture. That is not the case today.

Reasons for choosing a raw food lifestyle are many; whether it is too eat healthy, lose weight or environmental in nature. Whatever the reason for starting, once someone starts a raw foods diet program, they quickly find it becomes more of a lifestyle. Basically raw foodists, as they are called, come from all walks of life, but share some of the same ideas about diet. The main thing about raw foodism is that the food remains in its natural state. There is no processing, aside from cutting, juicing, blending or sprouting. And even this is done just before consumption, allowing the foods natural enzymes to stay intact.

Most raw foodists do not eat a 100% raw food diet, but believe the higher the overall percentage the better. This means some will eat cooked foods, and in some cases, fish and eggs. Which leads to the next bit of confusion. Not all vegans are raw foodists, and vice-versa.

If vegans only eat plant based products, wouldn't that be the same as raw foods? Not necessarily, as vegans can cook their food and still be vegans. And some raw foodists eat fish, eggs, and dairy products; and therefor not vegans. However, it is possible for a person to be both.

There are even different types of raw foodists. They are classified by what comprises most of their diet. Fruitarians, juicers, and vegans are the more common examples. Each believes their way is best, but some may be prone to problems. Fruit has a lot of naturally occurring sugar which can sometimes have poor effects in some people (but a practicing fruitarian would not likely admit this). This not scare you from trying a particular raw food diet, but it is good to be aware of possible pitfalls ahead of time.

One word of caution as you progress into raw foodism, and that is to not become too preachy. You have found a way of life, care about others and want to share what you know - and see them receive the same benefits. The best way to do it is by example. Let others approach you. In this way you will be able to spread the word to those who are open to learning more at a time that is right for them.

Does switching to a raw food lifestyle mean you are going to drop out of society, and drop all of your responsibilities? Of course not. But it does mean you could experience better health, enjoy preparing real food, and life a better life than you ever have before.
